Some New Things on My Website

It’s April 3rd now, and in typical fashion we had a big snow storm last night that left about 6 inches in my yard.  But what’s nice about spring time in Colorado is that it will likely all be gone by tomorrow, and then it will snow again before the end of May, I promise.  But I am not writing tonight to give a weather update, I am writing to inform my readers of a few changes on my website.

As most of you know, I attempted to be a product re-seller for a while, and that just proved to be too much work and took away from my time to write.  I gave that up a couple of months ago so that I could concentrate on my writing while I pursued a couple of other options.  After all, I don’t get paid for doing this, but there may be ways to make money for my efforts.

So in the past few days I have joined with Amazon and Google to incorporate ads for them into my website.  The Google ads aren’t fully in place yet, but I do have a place holder for them once I am approved.  The Amazon connection is the list of products that can be seen on the left side of my pages.  For both of these I will receive a small commission if I drive people to their websites, which is quite different than what I originally set out to do, but that’s OK.  As I have said before, my strength is my writing, not my marketing, so this is a compromise that may at least pay for the cost of this website.

This doesn’t mean that you will be targeted for spamming or any other invasive marketing tactics when you visit my website, I am merely advertising for other people.  You can either ignore those ads, or take action on them, as the products I choose to put on my pages are actually my choice, and I do endorse those products, at least for the Amazon products, I am waiting to see what is going to happen with Google.  To me this seems like a pretty safe venture that won’t cost me too much time, and I really see it as a service to my readers, especially with the Amazon products. You can actually get to any Amazon product through my website, so keep that in mind when you are shopping.

I have seen some abnormal behavior though in testing these new links with various browsers.  Things work fine with Google Chrome, but there are intermittent problems with Internet Explorer and Fox Fire.  I am working on those things, but I am not sure I can fix them.  When

you visit my web site, it should look like this image to the right.  But with other browsers I am seeing some inconsistent displays of my website, and until (or if) I can get that resolved, I apologize.  It’s a constant work in progress, I am always trying to make this website a valuable resource to my readers, but I seem to be constantly challenged with the various technical aspects, which is ironic considering that my real profession is in information technology, but I will get it figured out.

What I like about this setup is that I can still research and recommend products, but I don’t have to carry that inventory, and I can usually get you a better price through this program.  All you have to do is click on the product image and you will be taken to Amazon to see the information about that product.  This allows me the flexibility to provide product reviews, and still be able to focus on my writing. Check it out the next time you visit.  I am quite impressed with the breadth of products I can offer my readers through this service, so I think we all win with this new approach.

But as always my main focus will be on my writing, sharing my knowledge and opinions, and trying to get more people involved in the outdoors and wildlife conservation.  Although my spring time activities will be limited to walking on flat surfaces, I still plan to keep on writing, and to get out as much as I can with my limited physical abilities.  Once the end of June gets here, assuming my recovery has gone well, I will be able to shed this back brace and really start getting into shape for a fall elk hunt.  That is my goal, and one that I am determined to attain.
